Claustrophobia and scuba diving?
I go to Vietnam and Cambodia this winter, and I really want to do a dive in open water PADI certification while I'm here. I never really dived before. Snorkeling in Thailand this summer, what interested me. Was awesome, I had no idea that life underwater is so amazing. My only concern is that I am somewhat claustrophobic. In some cases, like when I'm on a bus night and I just wake up, or if I wear a turtleneck top, I start to feel really claustrophobic. But I can board planes, trains and subways completely wrapped or bus, or being in a packed crowd at a concert, or in a small room without any problem. Any divers out there know if claustrophobic trends will get in the way, or do you have experiences to share?
If you can snorkel, you should be fine. Many people who say they are claustrophobic have problems with wearing a mask and breathing through a snorkel. If you are comfortable with those, then you should have no problems. Please let your instructor about your concerns before you pay for the class, and again when school starts. As an instructor, I wonder if my students have concerns or questions. Most of the time I encountered these problems before (believe me, they are more common than many people think), and can help you address them.
