What is the difference between compressed air and Nitrox? (Scuba Diving)?

The term nitrox is commonly used to refer to Enriched Air Nitrox, often abbreviated EANx. While nitrox can refer to any gas mixture consisting primarily of oxygen & nitrogen - including air (20.9% oxygen, 78% nitrogen) which is sometimes called "normoxic" nitrox - the word nitrox is usually reserved for mixtures in which the percentage of oxygen is higher than that of air. The two standard mixtures that recreational divers use will contain 32% oxygen/68% nitrogen (EAN32) or 36% oxygen/64% nitrogen (EAN36), however recreational nitrox training allows for the use of anything from 21% to 40% oxygen.
The benefit of nitrox is that the diver is exposed to less nitrogen absorption during the dive and so dives times can be extended and/or surface intervals can be shortened in comparison to the diver using compressed air. The disadvantage of nitrox is the additional risk of oxygen toxicity caused by high partial pressures of oxygen, which is managed by limiting the maximum depth and by monitoring the "O2 clock".
Nitrox mixtures that contain less than 21% oxygen or more than 40% oxygen require additional training and specially prepared equipment, and is considered to be part of the technical diving discipline as opposed to recreational diving.
