Lead Weight
You are in a boat in a swimming pool with a large lead weight which you throw over the side.?
What happens to the water level with respect to the side of the swimming pool. Does it go down, up or stay the same.
Going back to Tercir's example but with real numbers, one cu ft of lead would actually weigh about 800 lb in the boat and would therefore displace 800 lb (12.8 cu ft) of water. Once thrown overboard and having landed on the bottom of the pool, it displaces only 1 cu ft of water and is therfore buoyed up by only 62.5 lbs. The rest of its weight is supported by the bottom of the pool. The boat displaces 12.8 cu ft less than it originally displaced, so the net change in volume is 1.0 - 12.8 = -11.8 cu ft. The pool level goes down by this number divided by the area in sq ft of the pool surface.
This is a VERY old problem and can be confusing if you don't think it through.....
