Breath Hold
I read to NEVER hold your breath during a Yoga session. How true is that?
I read that you should never hold your breath while meditating or doing some yoga. But a lot of form of Yoga asks you to hold your breath in different ratio like 4-7-8 etc.. What is your personaly experience breathing ratio? Thanks
Perhaps there is confusion between breathing instructions applying to asana practice (yoga postures), especially Vinyasa, versus various other pranayam (yogic breath regulation) techniques.
During asana practice (again, especially Vinyasa), the breath is not held.
(Vinyasa is frequently defined as breath-synchronized movement).
Ujjayi without retention is the only pranayam technique I have heard recommended during asana practice.
I believe the various other pranayam techniques, such as those incorporating varying inhale/exhale ratios, are intended to be initiated and concluded while maintaining a single posture (often Padmasana/Full Lotus, Sukhasana/Easy pose, or other related poses).
People often interpret the term 'yoga' as only pertaining to asana (since frequently, that is only part of yoga that Westerners practice).
Asana is actually a small slice of yogic knowledge.
